Irony or insult? A Russian beer brand Rewort has sparked controversy by allegedly featuring Mahatma Gandhi’s image on its packaging. As the pictures and videos of the alcoholic beverage have surfaced online, it has led to outrage among Indian netizens.
Social worker Shri. Suparno Satpathy shared the pictures of the beer in the question on Twitter and requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to look into the matter. He also urged the PM to discuss this matter with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a post shared on X, Satpathy wrote, “My humble request with PM @narendramodi Ji is to take up this matter with his friend @KremlinRussia_E. It has been found that Russia’s Rewort is selling Beer in the name of GandhiJi… SS (sic).”
Considering that Mahatma Gandhi was a lifelong advocate of abstinence from alcohol, featuring his image on an alcoholic beverage has sparked outrage.

Many social media users have called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and demanded action against the brand for disrespecting India’s revered leader. As the pictures and videos are going viral on the internet, netizens are expressing their anger over the perceived misuse of Gandhi’s image for commercial purposes. Some have urged the Indian government to discuss this with Russian authorities at the earliest, while others have called for a boycott of the brand.

One X user wrote, “A Russian company is selling beer named after Mahatma Gandhi—because nothing says ‘honoring a staunch opponent of alcohol’ like slapping his name on a booze bottle.”

“This should be banned in Russia they are playing with our intentions. How it will be if in India we will sell beer with Putin pic,” another commented.
